Hot Diggity Dog!

Here's the story: Harry Stevens began the tradition of selling hot dogs at sporting events in 1901 at the New York Polo Grounds. Vendors served the dogs from portable hot water tanks, yelling: "They're red hot! Get your dachshund sausages while they're red hot!"

Hearing the vendors' calls, Dorgan drew a cartoon depicting a dachshund (the dog) lying in a bun. He was unsure how to spell "dachshund" so he simply wrote, "Hot Dog!"
