1. Teacher: "Bobby hasn't been too consistent with putting his blocks away during pickup time." Parent replies:
- "Well, he cleans up some of the time, doesn't he?"
- "Oh yes. He's a little lazy, isn't he?"
- "He does the same thing at home. What can we do about it?"
2. Teacher: "Carrie is such a big help to me. She's always willing to give the teachers a helping hand." Parent says:
- "That's great to hear."
- "I'm glad she likes to help you, but how is she with the other children? Does she make friends easily?"
- "Oh no, is she becoming the teacher's pet?"
3. Teacher: "Ryan has a hard time listening during storytime." Parent says:
- "Well, he probably just gets fidgety sitting there for so long."
- "I don't read to him much. Are there any books you recommend for his age?"
- "Oh, that's unfortunate, isn't it?"
4. Teacher: "Unfortunately, we had an incident with Jessica today. She was hitting several of the other children." Parent replies:
- "Oh my goodness. What do you think brought that behavior on? Well, there are some things going on at our house that you need to be aware of."
- "Well, one of the kids must have provoked her, because there is no hitting going on in my house."
- "That's not like her."
5. Teacher: "Adam has been having difficulty sharing the toys with the other children." Parent says:
- "Well, do the other kids share with him?"
- "Really?"
- "Really? What can I do at home to help him understand what sharing is all about?"

You should pay more attention to what the teacher is trying to tell you.
You're a good listener and want to find out what's really going on.
You needn't be so defensive. The teacher's on your side.
