1. How can you tell how far away a flash of lightning is in a storm?

  Light from the flash of lightning travels faster than the sound of thunder. Count the seconds between the flash and the thunder.
  The sound of thunder travels twice as fast as the flash of lightning. Count the seconds between the thunder and the lightning, and then multiply by two.
  The length of the thunder clap will tell you how far away the lightning is.
